Direct API access is not automatically cheaper. On the flagship closed models the big consumer apps often sell below fal and Replicate list price. The API wins on open models, upscaling, GPT Image, automation, and on never paying for credits you don't use.
Freepik/Magnific Premium annual is 2.8x cheaper than fal or Replicate.
Freepik Premium. Unlimited on Premium+. Runway's app charges $0.25 for the same image.
Replicate. This is where the wrapper tax is real: 3x on medium, 4x on high quality.
Clarity Upscaler on Replicate, GPU-billed. Topaz on fal is $0.08. Unlimited on Freepik Premium+.
All wrapper prices are computed on the cheapest sensible paid plan billed annually, at 100% credit utilization. Monthly billing adds 25 to 67%. Unused credits make everything worse (see breakeven table).
Neither platform has a subscription, minimum, or platform fee. You prepay credits (fal) or get billed monthly (Replicate). Failed runs are free on both. Volume discounts exist only on enterprise contracts.

For hosted models both platforms pass through the vendor's own list price. Google's Gemini API charges the same $0.40/s for Veo 3.1 with audio and the same $0.039 for Nano Banana. The margin the API platforms take over the model vendor is close to zero. The wrappers, by contrast, buy wholesale.

Reading the pattern: Google (Veo) and Kuaishou (Kling) clearly give the big wrappers wholesale rates well under the public API list. ByteDance (Seedance), OpenAI (Sora), and Runway do not, so those land at parity or a modest markup. OpenArt and Imagine.art are the consistent outliers at 2 to 4.5x.
Magnific no longer sells a standalone plan. It bills from the shared Freepik pool (Freepik has rebranded to "Magnific, formerly Freepik"), and Premium+ and up get unlimited upscaling and editing.

Per upscale, Replicate Clarity is 4 to 7x cheaper and Topaz on fal is 3x cheaper than Magnific on Premium. But Premium+ makes upscaling free at the margin: past roughly 130 4K upscales a month, the $33.75 plan beats even Clarity on Replicate, and it bundles 50K credits and unlimited Nano Banana Pro on top.
The per-credit rate on flagship models is not where these companies make money. Four things are.

Industry norm for consumer credit plans is 30 to 50% utilization. At 40% use, every wrapper number in sections 2 and 3 is effectively 2.5x higher.

For a person clicking in a browser, Freepik Premium+ is 3x cheaper than the API for this mix. For an agent fleet, the API is the only one of these that runs unattended at that price, and its cost is fully variable.
