The Wrapper Tax: What AI Models Really Cost

I priced every major AI image and video model two ways: straight from the API on fal.ai and Replicate, and through the apps that resell them (Freepik/Magnific, Higgsfield, OpenArt, Krea, Leonardo, Runway, the Kling app). The result is not what the feed says. On the flagship models the apps are often cheaper than the API. The tax hides somewhere else. Verified 13 Sep 2026, every number sourced.

01The Test
Price the same clip both ways before you believe anyone
Pick one generation you make every week and price it twice. Veo 3.1, 8 seconds, 1080p with audio: $3.20 on fal.ai or Replicate ($0.40 per second), $1.16 on Freepik Premium billed annually (1,600 credits at $0.000725 each). Nano Banana Pro at 2K: $0.15 on the API, $0.054 on Freepik, unlimited on Premium+. Kling 3.0 at 720p: $0.084 per second on fal, $0.051 on Freepik, $0.049 in Kling's own app. Google and Kuaishou give the big apps wholesale rates the public API does not get. Do this once for your own top three models and the whole debate resolves in ten minutes.
02API Wins
Know the models where the API actually wins
Three families are cheaper direct, every time. GPT Image 2: $0.047 medium and $0.128 high on Replicate, versus $0.145 and $0.51 on Freepik, a 3 to 4x tax. Upscaling: Clarity Upscaler on Replicate runs about $0.05 for a 4K output on GPU billing, Topaz on fal is $0.08, Magnific charges $0.26 on Premium. Open models like FLUX dev, Wan 2.2, Qwen and Real-ESRGAN cost cents on the API. Seedance 2.0 and Sora 2 are at parity on Replicate, and fal bills Seedance per token which lands 1.5x above Replicate. Route those to the API and let the apps have the Google and Kling models.
03The Real Tax
Find the tax where it actually lives
The per-credit rate on flagship models is not where these companies make money. Four things are. Monthly billing costs 25 to 67% more than annual (Krea +67%, Kling +52%, Freepik +38%, Runway +25%). Top-up packs run 20% to 2.3x above plan credits (Pika 2.3x, Kling +90%, OpenArt +80%, Higgsfield +55%). Expiring credits: Higgsfield and OpenArt reset monthly with no rollover, Krea packs die in 90 days. And resold models priced as if closed: OpenArt and Imagine.art charge 2 to 4.5x on every video model, Runway's app charges $0.25 for a Nano Banana Pro image the API sells for $0.15. Never pay monthly. Never buy a pack. Check the expiry before the price.
04Breakeven
Run the breakeven on your real utilization
An app price only counts at 100% credit use, and the industry norm is 30 to 50%. So compute the breakeven: app price at full use divided by API price. Veo 3.1 on Freepik: $1.16 / $3.20 = 36%, use more than a third of your credits and the app wins. Nano Banana Pro: 36%. Hailuo 2.3: 39%. Kling 3.0: 60%. Seedance 2.0 on Freepik: 113%, the API wins even at full use. GPT Image 2: 300%, never. Open your last invoice, count the credits you actually burned, and you have your number. At 40% utilization every app price in the tables is effectively 2.5x.
05The Split
Split the stack: apps for hands, API for agents
For a person clicking in a browser, one Freepik/Magnific Premium+ seat at $33.75 a month annual covers a full content month: unlimited Nano Banana Pro, Seedream 5, Kling 2.5 and Magnific upscales, plus Veo 3.1 at a third of API price. That same month costs about $102 on fal and Replicate. For an agent fleet the API is the only route that runs unattended at that price, and the cost is fully variable: nothing expires, nothing goes unused. Replicate for Seedance, Kling 2.x, Nano Banana 2, Runway and Clarity. fal for Kling 3.0 (half of Replicate's price), Pika, GPT Image 2 low and medium. Keep Higgsfield only for its own models. Skip OpenArt and Imagine.art for video entirely.
The audit prompt · paste into Claude Code with your last month of generations
Here is my last month of AI generations as a list: model, resolution, duration, count.
1. For each row, look up today's price on fal.ai and replicate.com model pages and take the cheaper one.
2. Look up the same generation's credit cost in the app I use and multiply by my plan's annual price per credit.
3. Add my real utilization: credits used divided by credits included last month.
4. Output one table: generation, API cost, app cost at 100%, app cost at my utilization, breakeven utilization, winner.
5. Finish with the split: which rows move to the API, which stay in the app, and the monthly total each way.
